All thoughts and opinions are my own. Colgan has some really interesting material to work with, including mothers who want to return to work but feel guilty, and the loyality a widowed person owes to their dead spouse, but she doesn't develop those themes in a meaning. Don't worry if you haven't read the earlier books in the series- you'll be fine hopping in. It is a great book in general but an awesome Christmas Story. I'm so confused. The plot involved major suspension of disbelief (a spoiled, lazy foreign prince is forced by his father to get a job in the kitchen of a hotel on a small Scottish island). This is the novel for you, so snuggle up with a mug of cocoa or glass of mulled wine and soak in island life as everyone prepares for Christmas. Colgan writes so well. The characters are terrific (you can hear their voices), the setting so wonderfully described (the wind, the rain, the snow), and storytelling magnificent.
Not realizing that this was book 4 in a series, I read it without having read the previous books so It took me a bit of time to sort out who the various characters were. Their stories unfold amidst a close-knit town peopled with memorable characters and delightful details. Chapters alternate character perspectives, delving into ongoing issues with newly widowed Fintan, as he struggles to honor his husband's dreams; Flora, restless during her pregnancy, takes on a larger role in opening the island hotel; and the continued, cutting uncertainty between island doctor Saif, a Syrian refugee, and schoolteacher Lorna. The book wasn't confusing, but I'm sure my enjoyment of it suffered by not knowing the various characters' back stories. Just got the Audible version!
