But the bad news is that the whole story is utterly implausible - irritatingly so. The only thing that prevented me from giving it a five star rating was the rather incredulous plot decision to take Wallander out of his familiar Swedish locales and endeavors and thrust him rather impulsively back into the bowels of Latvia, complete with cold-war like characters and double, no make that triple, crosses in the story line. The plot is rather thin, and anything that could have added any literary quality to the story is lacking: no intricate metaphors to contemplate, no depth of character whatsoever, no nicely crafted prose. I've also since seen a few of the Swedish TV episodes and the Brannaugh BBC TV series.

Most annoying, however, is the author's complete and utter ignorance about the city that features so prominently in his book: the descriptions of the city of Riga are totally inadequate. Loved Mankell's writing -- very descriptive, you feel like you're in Latvia in 1991. It's very much a book nailed into 1991, in that transitional period between the Baltic state's break with Russia and eventual adoption into the EU.
