He introduces us to a young college graduate (Dustin Hoffman) who returns to a ferociously stupid upper-middle-class California suburb.

Today it is at No 22 on the list of highest-grossing films of all-time at the US box office, after inflation, above more traditional crowd-pleasers such as Jurassic World, Forrest Gump and The Avengers. One of the most persistent is that movie characters have to react to funny events in the same way that stage actors do.

The Graduate is different from other "Coming of Age" movies and books, since Benjamin is a little older. At 35, Bancroft was only six years older than Hoffman, and eight years older than Katharine Ross, who played her daughter, Elaine. Everything goes alright until Benjamin starts falling in love with missus Robinson's daughter Elaine. So Benjamin may have been too callow to sympathise much with a “broken-down alcoholic” Mrs Robinson, but from their thirtysomething vantage point, the film-makers could clearly see both sides.

But in the direct style of new British directors, the audience is the target of the joke, and the funny events do not happen in the movie -- they are the movie. It is funny, not because of sight gags and punch lines and other tired rubbish, but because it has a point of view.

The influential film is a biting satire/comedy about a recent nebbish, East Coast college graduate who finds himself alienated and adrift in the shifting, social and sexual mores of the 1960s, and questioning the values of society (with its keyword "plastics"). His confusion is lessened but his life becomes more complicated when he is reacquainted with Elaine Robinson, the Robinsons' daughter who too is home from college at Berkeley and who he has not seen since high school. Cinema reissues can always rely on nostalgic appeal, but there’s so much more to appreciate about The Graduate, when watched through the lens of 2017. He is caught between adolescence and adulthood searching for the meaning of his upper middle class suburban world of his parents. In 1964, he spent his own money optioning the original novel of the same name by Charles Webb, and then followed two years of being turned down by every major studio in town.

It was the Summer of Love, the first one. Although the world should be his oyster, Ben is instead in a state of extreme anxiety as he has no idea what to do with his life, which is made all the more difficult since everybody asks him what he plans on doing or tells him what he should do. Thinking about and then eventually succumbing to her advances only adds to his anxiety and confusion as he hides what they're doing from the rest of the world, and as he needs more than just sex in a relationship, sex which is all she wants from him.

Miss Ross, a newcomer previously seen in "Games," not only creates a character with depth and honesty, but is so attractive that now we know how Ann-Margret would have looked if she had turned out better. The Graduate is released in the UK on 23 June.
