I feel bad writing this tbh, but like this woman is not meant to be a teacher. Your grade relies almost entirely on 4 projects, which would be fine if she didn't have a ton of useless homework, her guidelines were not horribly vague and her feedback horrible. I loved Sylvia & would take a class from her again. She pushes you to become a better writer, she might be tough on you but she just cares about you succeeding. She bans about every possible topic you could possibly want to write on. Worst teacher I have EVER had. She received her early education in Malaysia but subsequently received her secondary education at Nanyang Girls’ High School in Singapore. Chan seems like a nice person but this class was terrible. Sylvia has a heart of gold. Have to BS whole way through the course. For some reason every assignment this year has been about race. She's very upfront and she tries to "scare" you with all the HW planned the whole semester.

That said, Prof. Chan is really friendly and respectful. Over the course of its journey, Sylvia Chan Education Agent has established a firm foothold in education support industry in Australia. Such a refreshing model. This is the Honors English class and it is a hard class as is but Sylvia is a great professor. She is very clear about deadlines and such, but you can not procrastinate.
Do yourself a favor and just choose a different professor. Your email address will not be published. But you basically write them in class, get feedback in class, everything in class: it's not hard. Professor Chan is such a dope person, she's super passionate about social justice and takes pride in what she does. She wouldn't let some students make up work when they were sick. She was a much easier grader for 101 but ENG102 is much hard across the entire department. This class took up a lot of my time because she expects great work on every assignment but she gives solid feedback. You write "journals" which build directly into your essays.

Because journals are graded on effort and on time, you can explore your ideas and test them out without fear of bad ideas. She is extremely helpful outside of class though and helps as much as she can.

All her assignments follow her life--which is poetry and foster kid advocacy and the people that they are for, like black lives and social remembrance and you. Not a bad thing, but I feel like I can't have any opinion on it.

Not for those who want an easy A and does make us do a video project. Other classes for 109H have less HW. This class was pretty tough but it's an honors course, so you should expect to work harder. As long as you are willing to put in the work she will help and support you as you discover your writing voice. Just overall makes me uncomfortable because I was just expecting literature not such opinion/ view heavy assignments.

This is not the right class for you if you are huge on procrastination or not showing up to class because you simply wont pass. She's a really good professor and really easy to talk to and get feedback from. That's the kind of teacher you're lucky to have, not because she sounds good, but because she is the real thing. My love for writing and language was a new one thanks to Sylvia's class. I'm happy I took this class.
