As is par for the course, some things are just as they seem while others are quite the surprising twist.

The author did a fabulous job of unsettling me more than once and that's a good thing in a suspense. Ardent Holmesians might not love its basic premise: Holmes has married a woman at least 3 decades younger and as formidable as himself. With a riveting, suspenseful plot, well-portrayed, lively characters, plenty of action, fine writing, vivid portrayals of Japan and Oxford, humor, and ninjas, how could I not? It truly dragged for me.

Russell and Holmes' latest adventure covers the interim time frame between two other cases from their past and has continuation into their present. Holmes points out Lord Darby who ten years earlier escaped justice for various blackmailing schemes. I have been a big fan of this series from way back and the earlier novels, Beekeeper's Apprentice and others, are some of the best in Sherlock Holmes novels I have ever read outside of the Conan Doyle canon. I missed feeling invested in the crime they needed to solve. Then, flashback to a year plus earlier, when Mary and Holmes were getting on a cruise ship for a voyage into the Orient, to terminate in Japan. Brilliantly written, colourful, evocative of the period, and all the locations. There is an eventful voyage, a tour of Japan, a return to England and the story picks up again at the beginning for an interesting finishing run. Her voice sounds authentic and unaffected. Dreaming Spies has things in common with several earlier books in the series – a journey to an exotic location (in this case, Japan), a road trip in which Holmes and Russell learn more about the country, the culture, the language, and themselves, and a testing our heroes are compelled to endure before they can fully undertake the case in question. Perhaps I feel that the predictable structure of the mystery will translate into more order and resolution to my own life. It pains me to write this because I've been anxiously awaiting Dreaming Spies for two years, but this was not my favorite Laurie R King book. Dreaming Spies. Ninjas, of course! Sorry, this title is no longer available. I have enjoyed and found believable the overall scenario of the relationship between the two main characters and have been delighted with the various scenarios which are so different in each book and which have such interesting detail either as characters from elsewhere reappear or as in this volume, aspects of Oxford such as the Bodlian library are depicted with such lovely detail.
