This deal is an absolute must and you can crash next to the water on Kane Creek Rd when you're done and sleep happily ever after... zzzzzzz. Almost all the steps and ledges had ramps built into them so it is possible to roll practically everything on this trail without having to do any hucking. But since this is the Captain Ahab listing, I'll focus specifically on this trail.

It is gnarly, chucky slickrock that is still somehow flowy. Very easy to hurt yourself out here. 238.02 m Down, 100.8 mi I like this trail.

Very steep. Advanced riders will probably survive with some dabbing and walking. 350' Up It has good flow but is worth the double black rating. When Moby Dick is finally sighted, Ahab's hatred robs him of … I say descent, as that's mostly what it is, but there are a couple of short, pedally climbs mixed in. NOT OKAY!

There is a section of cliff exposure but it's not nearly as exposed as some other trails in the area and is easily walkable. My advice: look before you leap.

Some technical terrain and limited alternate lines. 4.1mi

Rode Hymasa up to a small connector putting us on the halfway point of Ahab.

I think every mountain biker should test themselves on this trail at some point. I did a review on the amasa back area that is more descriptive but this is truly an amazing trail.

Don't want to take air? It has some short techy climbs (short enough so that they don't sap your energy, but require skill to get over without dismounting) and lots of technical downhill with several drops (no drops higher than 2 feet).

Took Hymasa up to this one and of course by the time I got started on Ahab, it was night. Being a jerk / offensive? You can continue over to Pothole Arch on double track and slickrock for a side trip at this point.

• Hymasa is a bit easier, so if you are unsure of your skill, start there, and then climb back up Hymasa to do Captain Ahab.

This trail is an adventure in itself. Steep.

Captain Ahab is a one-way trail in the Amasa Back riding area. Be prepared this not a trail for the faint hearted. A phenomenal trail. • Hymasa and upper Ahab 418.31 m Up Climb for 1,200 vertical feet over ledgy slickrock, descend famous Captain Ahab Amasa Back had been a favorite ride since the beginning and now has a world class upgrade with singletrack routes uphill on the Hymasa Trail, and downhill on the much buzzed about Captain Ahab Trail. I guess I expected a lot more down and more flow after riding up Hymasa 2.7 miles. VIDEO.

THE RIDE.

The lower half of the route drops into tight singletrack nesteled above Kane Creek.

So sick! It serves up the best of what Moab can offer the advanced rider, with lots of technical slick rock, but nothing terribly scary. Captain Ahab is an absolute masterpiece of a descent! • Loved every bit of it, rolled right through this, Praise The Lord for safety.

5.3 km After the first series of descents and rollouts, Captain Ahab contours a bit with some short punchy climbs and drops. This bypasses all the jeep road to Captain Ahab(signage good}.

But the beauty of this trail is, that for the most part, you can make it as difficult as you want.

There are lots of rock steps and lots of short steep pinches you have to punch up.

But back to the descent.

I was told the full Ahab wasn't worth it, rather doing two half Ahabs was a better use of our time and energy.

22h 00m, absolutely amazing. I used Hymasa to get to the beginning. Everything is rideable; most drops roll right off though some may seem intimidating.

A good flowing trail network will have most trails flowing in a single direction according to their intension. Technical terrain with no alternate lines. Ride up. It must be reached via the Amasa Back or Hymasa trails.

Jewel of the Amasa Back area, relatively new to the other trails. Pure awesomeness throughout. If you survive you will have found enlightenment and will never be the same again. 5,636' Down I really loved this trail.

The Hymasa Trail is magnificent advanced climbing singletrack.

Sustained tech, backcountry feel, rugged beauty. • Ahab is a little under 4 miles of singletrack slick rock climbs and drops interspersed with small sections of dirt singletrack. Techy trail, the most technical I did while in Moab. It is relentlessly and intensely technical with steep ups, steep downs, rock steps, rock drops, side exposure, rock gardens and very little easy going. Just make sure that you don't try taking air near the sign that says "walk your bike," as you could find yourself flying off into a beautiful abyss. 758' Down Captain Ahab is a fictional character and one of the main protagonists in Herman Melville's Moby-Dick (1851).

Also the scenery is epic. This trail was definitely built with experienced all-mountain riders in mind.

At the end you'll meet back up with the Amasa Back trail and ride it back to the entrance, hike out and head back to your car.

Able to ride most of it, but it was challenging. A must ride.
