Just when you think the song is going to be a story of sorts, leading you through a plot via simple lyrical metaphor and narration, he starts the 2nd verse with assertions of his lost love, and the male condition in general: ” A man needs something he can hold onto

This makes for a pretty bleak snapshot but I don’t think it is unrealistic, especially for an artist like Ray who seem to refuse to pull punches with their lyrics. In any case this song is a deep cut… supreme songwriting. I am so infinitely grateful to Ray for writing this song. There’s a fire in my blood! His lyrics range from pretty freakin’ cheesy to incredibly haunting…a few excerpts: “I could hold you in my arms

Ray’s voice is defintiely his strong suit, audibly speaking (I made that phrase up, its probably improper grammar, blame my crazy English professor Freshman year of college).

To be clear, Ray isn’t exactly Jimmy Page on the 6-string, but he holds his own. As the song continues, I always start to think of different reasons why this man might be sitting on this curb…did he lose a woman?

I could hold you in my arms My feeling is that he writes the melodies first and the lyrics second, as I do in my own songwriting, so he had a good backdrop with which to begin. Although the album was released in 2004, the song didn't enter the top five of the UK charts until August 2006.

I am so happy with everything written here! The song "Shelter" was featured in the film Prime (2005). Critics have compared LaMontagne's music to that of Otis Redding, The Band, Van Morrison, Nick Drake and Tim Buckley.

He would listen to records all day, and had already decided that he was going to sing and write music for the rest of his life.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not comparing Ray’s songwriting to either, but simply the sound of his voice.

Ray’s the man–bar non–when it comes to singer/songwriters and folk music. “Jolene” is no exception as he hits the nail right on the head.

I hadn’t heard THIS version until today and it easily takes the top between the two versions.

His first album, “Trouble,” was a pretty eclectic mix of tunes…from “How Come,” a faster paced, anti-war song very reminiscent…well, kind of a rip off…of “Feeling Alright” by Joe Cocker, to “Burn”, which is just Ray and his guitar. I am so infinitely grateful to Ray for writing this song. He is using it as a term of resolution in the song. I don’t know if it’s the lyrics or the melody (probably a combination of both) but as soon as I hear this song all sorts of creative thoughts flow into my brain. Ray does a great job of using simple chord progressions, and the mastery of his producer, to create a great musical background to his lyrics (not that he wrote one before the other, but in collaboration with the words). This is only my personal interpretation, but it seems to be an obvious allusion to the fact that no matter what a man wants out of life, whether that be running around and banging everything in sight, making money and looking down on those who don’t have it, starting a family, whatever, he needs something, as Ray states, “To hold onto.” Whether a 9-pound hammer is analogous to a steady job, a passion, or something more tangible, it seems the main character in “Jolene” has neither the hammer, nor the woman.

The chorus probably answers that question (copied above in the lyrics section).

Ray is the kind of songwriter that can write a love song without seeming like a huge p&ssy; and in the era of Nick Lachey’s “What’s Left of Me,” that certainly speaks volumes. I just couldn’t bring myself to listen to anything else when something so wonderful existed right in front of me.

So here’s the first post about an artist that while certainly gaining some fame and critical acclaim (unintentional rhyme), still isn’t as popular as a “Howie Day” type singer/songwriter, though is an exceedingly more talented songwriter. Sold my coat when I hit Spokane The first time I heard Ray’s “Three More Days” and “Trouble” I fell in love with his song writing. But I digress…When he begins singing the first verse, you know you’re in for a ride…its one of those songs that you can’t just listen to in passing…it makes you concentrate, and truly envision whatever the artist is singing about. There are a few things about addiction, specifically hitting “rock bottom” that fit with the themes of this song remarkably well. Everything is very open with a very clear clarification of the issues.
